Chronic rhinitis is reoccurring inflammation of the nose. Chronic rhinitis can either be allergic or non-allergic. It occurs when blood vessels in the nose dilate, filling the nasal lining with fluid and causing swelling and inflammation. The symptoms of rhinitis are similar to nasal allergy symptoms. In addition to a runny nose, stuffy nose and sneezing, symptoms typically include facial pain or pressure and postnasal drip caused by mucous accumulation in the back of the nose. Treatment for chronic rhinitis includes treating the cause such as allergies, using medication to relieve symptoms and irrigating the nasal passages. Surgery is available as a final option if other treatments do not work.
