A skin lesion is a part of the skin that has an abnormal growth or appearance compared to the skin around it. There are two categories of skin lesions, primary and secondary. Primary skin lesions are present at birth or acquired over one’s lifetime. A birthmark would be an example of a primary skin lesion. Secondary skin lesions evolve from primary lesions or develop as a consequence of a person’s activities. Melanoma resulting from sun exposure would be an example of a secondary skin lesion.
Skin Lesions We Diagnose
Our practice diagnoses and treats any type of facial skin lesion, including skin cancer such as Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Melanoma. Our specialty is treating skin cancers that require surgical excision and reconstruction. These reconstructions can be relatively simple to more complex depending on the cancer size, type and location.
Conditions We Treat
Most skin lesions are benign; however, only a biopsy can accurately diagnose a skin lesion. Treatment for a skin lesion will depend on the underlying cause, what type of lesions they are and the patient’s health history. Non-invasive treatments include avoiding allergens or oatmeal baths, topical ointments and antibiotics, and oral medications. If these treatments do not work or are not an option, the lesion will need to be removed by a surgical procedure. When the lesion is localized and has not spread to other parts of the body, the cure rate is more than 95 percent.
